As we move closer towards the deadline for entries to next years National Fish and Chip Awards, we would like to share these inspiring words from one of last year’s winners – Fish City.

Why did you enter?

“We entered the National Fish & Chip Awards for many reasons: publicity, benchmarking, raising our standards, having an edge over our competitors. Later it was more about benchmarking and being the best we can be. We wanted to prove that Northern Ireland and those in our region are as good as anyone across the UK.”

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of entering?

“To anyone thinking of entering, I would recommend to do so. It improves your business and makes you more professional by setting out all the areas and aspects of your business for analysis. It benchmarks you and provides publicity even if shortlisted. The process is great for team building and provides a sense of pride in what you are doing. The time scales of the awards and judging process push you to achieve goals within the business, which can benefit you well beyond the closing curtain on the awards ceremony. They also provide access to experts in the field and peers who are operating to the highest of standards.”

What did winning mean to you and your team?

“Winning has made Fish City a place our team are proud to be a part of and a place that guests want to try or return to. It has provided CV enhancement for our employees, support from the public, recognition in the press, and greater respect from business organisations and bodies. Winning has also provided opportunities for travel and improving our knowledge. From a personal standpoint, winning has provided proud recognition of our direction of travel and the work we have put in to both our business and in achieving the awards.”

Looking back, what has been the highlight so far?

Looking back, the highlight so far has been the heartfelt congratulations from the public, our peers, and industry suppliers. Participating in study trips and showcasing our products abroad have been lifetime opportunities.

This is just one of many success stories coming from businesses that made the decision to enter these awards. Are you ready to follow in their footsteps and become the next big name in Fish and Chips?

You still have time to enter! Entering doesn’t cost you a penny and is a very quick, straightforward process. Simply head over to our dedicated awards website and follow the instructions.

Did you know that fish and chips share a fascinating connection with one of the most pivotal moments in British History?

Picture this: It was June 6, 1944, a day etched in history as British troops launched their audacious assault on the beaches of Normandy. The soldiers, sailors and airmen involved were on the frontline of a monumental mission to liberate Europe.

Amidst the chaos of the war, the soldiers cherished fish and chips as a comforting reminder of home and normalcy. As they advanced through liberated territories, they introduced locals to their favourite dish – Fish and Chips.

Fast forward to today, and we continue to celebrate the enduring legacy of all those who fought in the war and who share our love of fish and chips. That’s why we have partnered up with Bruno Peek, Pageantmaster of the D-Day 80th Anniversary next year.

We are asking fish and chip shops to register so we can keep you up to date with how you can get involved in this special day which is likely to create a lot of publicity for the industry.
