Meeting with the Rt Hon Phillip Dunne MP – FATS OILS AND GREASE
Andrew Crook - NFFF President
February 25, 2021

I was asked to attend a summit of fats, oils and grease (FOG) to help to find a solution to the problems causes by waste oil entering the drains. This will be a long process but it is very important we are involved.

We all are aware of fatbergs but, like I used to think, we all believe its the takeaway down the road that has not got a waste oil collection in place and is pouring their oil down the drain. Whilst that may be the case in some instances there is a lot of waste oil produced through the washing up process and it is our responsibility to ensure it does not enter the drain.

I installed a grease trap last summer and we capture a few inches of waste oil a day in the hopper, times that by 10,000 shops then we re certainly part of the issue. They are quite expensive pieces of equipment but certainly better than a fine and do enable you to talk about steps you take to be an ethical operator.

There could be further legislation in the future but I think the NFFF have the duty to alert the industry nd help find a solution. We will be continuing our involvement in this forum and continue to update members.

The NFFF has just set up an environmental committee to keep ahead of the curve and work with Government, business and members to help shape a greener future for the industry.
