In just a few months, new government legislation will take effect requiring businesses in England, to implement mandatory food waste separation practices. By March 31, 2025, most non-household establishments in England will need to arrange for separate collection of food waste from general waste. Businesses with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees will be exempt from this requirement, though participation is still encouraged.
This legislation aims to improve waste management by diverting food waste from landfills and incineration, instead turning it into renewable energy and organic fertiliser.
In Preparation for this change, you may want to consider:
- Auditing waste: Review the types and quantities of waste you produce.
- Reviewing current waste practices: Look at current disposal methods and set up systems to make sure all food waste is separated from general waste .
- Understanding the new rules: Familiarise yourself with the legislation to ensure you’re ready by March 2025 and to avoid any penalties.
